National Council on the Aging (NCOA) survey finds significant quality-of-life differences between users and non-users of hearing instruments.

"Untreated hearing loss results in depression, anxiety, emotional instability, phobias, withdrawal, isolation, lessened health status and self esteem." This study revealed that hearing instruments are clearly associated with impressive improvements in the social, emotional, psychological and physical well being of people with hearing loss. Areas of substantial improvement include: greater earning power and enhanced health status, emotional stability, interpersonal relationships, intimacy and group social activity. The study also found: reduced communication difficulty, isolation, anger, frustration, depression, paranoia, anxiety, self-criticism and fewer incidences of pain.
